Description
Book Bugs is an all-fun, no-stress book club designed explicitly to build reading comprehension. Every week, students come together in a no-stress environment to listen to a read-aloud and discuss story elements. We focus on creating an enjoyable, shared reading experience while also working intentionally on comprehension and vocabulary.
What to Expect:
Each week, students listen to a captivating read-aloud, followed by discussions about the literature. From the characters to the settings to the themes, the teacher focuses on building reading comprehension while encouraging students to think critically and express their thoughts and opinions. Students do not read aloud in this class. They listen to the teacher read or to an audiobook.
Benefits of a Shared Reading Experience:
Shared reading experiences benefit neurodivergent learners, and Book Bugs Jr. is here to provide just that! Students not only enhance their reading skills, but they also develop social connections and gain confidence in expressing their ideas.
Children who are read to for 20 minutes per day:
- hear two million words
- have an increased activation in certain brain regions
- have improved mental health
- score better than 90% of their peers on standardized tests!
- develop higher levels of empathy and emotional intelligence
- say they like someone reading aloud to them
- The Literacy Project
Listen to a message from Newbery medal award-winning author, Kate DiCamillo, on the power of reading aloud together.
